2. How does the friendship between Georgia and Alice fill a need each has for the absence of a loving mother in their lives?

3. If you were Georgia, would you ever be able to renew your friendship with Alice? Under what conditions? Does Georgia “owe” Alice any special consideration because of her role as an egg donor?

4. Do you think Alice and Duncan stay together? Why or why not?

5 John and Alice both betray Georgia. Which betrayal is more significant? Why?

6. At one point, Alice realizes that “she had done this terrible thing, but she knew herself in a different way now. It was as though, in failing herself and Duncan and Georgia, she had gained the compassion that completed her as a full human being.” Do our mistakes make us more compassionate? Why or why not? Do Alice’s choices make her a more or less sympathetic character?

8. Does the book have a hero/heroine? Who? Why?

9. What should Haven be told about his origins? When? What should Liza be told? And Wren? Does Haven have two sisters, or one? Should a child born through an egg donation have the rights to information about his or her biological parent when he/she becomes an adult?

10. Can you understand why the affair happened? Do you like Alice and/or John? Could you forgive either one of them?
